How to use these reviews

Each review on this page covers the same ground for every lender: the loan amount range, the repayment term, the rate (or how the lender describes its pricing where a single rate isn't published), whether it's a direct lender or a loan-matching service, and its registration details — either a National Credit Regulator (NCR) number or, where a lender doesn't publish one, its stated company registration and country. We source every figure directly from each lender's own published information, not from a call centre script or a customer survey, and we flag it clearly wherever a lender's own materials don't state something (a specific rate, a turnaround time, an NCR number).

Person thoughtfully reading lender reviews and researching terms on a digital device

Of our 15 lenders, 6 are direct lenders — meaning they extend credit themselves and you'd be contracting directly with them — and 9 operate as loan-matching or aggregation services, taking your application and referring it into a network of separate credit providers. 6 of the 15 publish a South African NCR registration number we can point you to directly; the rest either operate under a foreign company registration (several loan-matching services in this panel are registered in Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Latvia or Armenia rather than South Africa) or don't state one in their published materials. Neither model is inherently better — a loan-matching service can sometimes widen your options beyond a single lender's own criteria — but it's worth knowing which you're dealing with, and confirming registration status yourself at ncr.org.za before you sign anything.

What to check before you apply, whichever lender you choose

Regardless of which review you read, three things are worth confirming for yourself before you sign anything. First, registration: if a lender states an NCR number, verify it's current at ncr.org.za or by calling the NCR's toll-free line on 0860 627 627 — registration status can change, and our review reflects what a lender had published at the time we last checked. Second, the pre-agreement quotation: by law, a registered credit provider must give you a written quotation setting out the total cost of credit before you're bound to an agreement, and that document — not any estimate on this site — is what you should rely on. Third, affordability: a lender is required to assess whether you can actually afford the repayments alongside your existing debt and living expenses, and a lender that skips this step or pressures you to sign without it is not behaving lawfully.

If you're comparing lenders by loan amount rather than by name, our loan amount pages group lenders by the specific figure you need. If you're comparing by loan type — payday, short-term, bad credit, and so on — our loan type pages do the same by category. And if your situation involves a specific eligibility question — whether SASSA recipients, students, or the unemployed can realistically qualify — our guides section answers that honestly, including where the honest answer is that most of our lenders aren't a fit.

Questions about our lender reviews

How do you choose which lenders to review?

We review the 15 lenders we work with directly, listed here in full — we don’t selectively omit a lender because its terms are less competitive. If a lender’s stated terms are worse than a peer’s on a given measure, our review says so.

Do you give lenders a star rating?

No. We don’t hold genuine, verified customer review data for any lender, so publishing a star rating or review count would mean inventing a number rather than reporting a real one. Instead, each review lays out the factual terms — amount, term, rate, registration — so you can compare on substance.

What’s the difference between a "Direct Lender" and a "Loan-Matching Service" badge?

A Direct Lender extends credit itself and is the party you'd contract with. A Loan-Matching Service takes your application and refers it to one or more separate credit providers in its own network, meaning your actual agreement is with whichever provider you're matched to, not the matching service itself. Both models are legitimate in South Africa, but it's worth knowing which one you're dealing with before you apply.

Are these reviews paid for by the lenders?

No lender pays us to publish a favourable review or to appear in this list. We do earn a referral fee, via our affiliate network, if you apply and are approved through a link on our site — full detail is on our how we make money page. That commercial relationship doesn’t change what we publish about a lender’s stated terms.

A note on how we work: Lendable Marketplace is a comparison website, not a lender or a registered credit provider. Some lenders listed are directly registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR); others operate as loan-matching or aggregation services that refer you to a registered provider. Always confirm who you're contracting with, and check any NCR registration number at ncr.org.za, before signing.
