Loans for pensioners in South Africa
Pension income can count when a lender checks affordability, but each lender sets its own rules. Here is what our panel says, and what to watch for.
See the lender that considers pensionersShort answer
Yes, pension income can count when a registered lender checks whether you can afford a loan. But each lender sets its own rules, and only one lender on our panel, Creditbar, says pensioners may apply.
Can pensioners get a loan?
There is no special legal type of pensioner loan. Pensioners apply in the same way as anyone else.
Before it lends, a registered lender must assess your existing financial means, prospects and obligations. This is the affordability check in section 81 of the National Credit Act.
A pension paid into your bank account shows up on your statements as income. Whether a lender accepts it is up to that lender.
Several providers on our panel ask for 3 months of bank statements. That is how they see your income.
- Regular income matters. Creditbar asks for a stable income over the last 3 months.
- Affordability matters more than age. A lender looks at what is left after your essential costs and existing debts.
- No approval is guaranteed. Each lender runs its own credit and affordability checks.
What our providers say about pensioners
We checked each provider's own wording for our reviews in October 2026. Only these five mention pensioners, grants, any type of income or an upper age limit.
| Provider | Type | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Creditbar | NCR-registered lender | Self-employed people and pensioners with regular income may apply. You must be 18 or older, with no upper age stated. |
| MoneyHello | Loan-matching service | Its FAQ says some of its specialised partners consider pensioners. Its requirements list a steady monthly income (salary). |
| Letocredit | Loan-matching service | Mentions any type of income. Each lender it passes you to sets its own checks. |
| Creditomax | Loan-matching service | Applicants must be 18 to 75. Its requirements don't mention pension income. |
| Prime Loans | NCR-registered lender | Needs at least 3 months of verifiable income, not made up of child grant money. It doesn't mention pensions. |
A loan-matching service is not a lender. It passes your details to partner lenders, who decide. Our other providers don't mention pensions or grants. That is neither a yes nor a no.
SASSA grant or retirement pension: what lenders may accept
Pensioners usually live on one of two kinds of income. Lenders may treat them differently.
No provider on our panel says how it treats a SASSA grant compared with a fund pension. Ask the lender before you apply.
A grant may leave little room for repayments once essentials are paid. Our SASSA loans guide covers grant income in more detail.
- SASSA older persons grant: for people aged 60 or older who pass a means test. From April 2026 it is up to R2,400 a month, or R2,420 if you are over 75.
- Retirement fund pension: a monthly pension from a former employer's fund or a private annuity. The Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) is one example.
Grant amounts and the age rule from gov.za and the Department of Social Development, checked October 2026.
Risks to watch for
- Your ID and cards. The NCR says credit providers may not keep your ID, bank card or SASSA card when granting credit. If they refuse to return them, report it to the police and the NCR on 0860 627 627.
- Credit life insurance. A lender may require it, but the cover can't exceed what you owe. You have the right to choose your own policy instead (section 106).
- Age limits. Some providers set an upper age, such as 75 at Creditomax. Check the rule before you apply.
- Protecting your pension. Repayments are often collected by debit order from your bank account. Budget for food, rent and medicine first.
- Unregistered lenders. Check any lender's NCR number on the NCR register of credit providers before you sign.
- Pressure to sign. Read the pre-agreement statement and quote first. Never sign a blank or incomplete form.
Before you apply
- Add up your monthly income and essential costs. See what is left for a repayment.
- Get 3 months of bank statements that show your pension being paid in.
- Check the provider's own rules on pension income and age.
- Check the lender's NCR number on the NCR register.
- Read the quote, including interest, fees and any credit life insurance.
- Borrow the smallest amount you need, over the shortest term you can afford.
- Already struggling with debt? Read about debt review or call the NCR on 0860 627 627 first.
A lender that says pensioners may apply
Creditbar is the only lender on our panel that says pensioners with regular income may apply. It lends R500 to R5,000 over 7 to 61 days. Approval still depends on its own checks.
NCR-registered lenders are listed first, then loan-matching services, in our commercial order. We may earn a commission if you apply through these links. It doesn't change what you pay. How we make money.
What a R2,000 loan over 30 days can cost at most
A small, short loan keeps the total cost down. Here is the legal maximum for a first R2,000 short-term loan.
| Amount borrowed | R2,000 over 30 days |
|---|---|
| Maximum interest rate | 5% a month (first short-term loan) |
| Interest | R100.00 |
| Initiation fee (incl. VAT) | R304.75 |
| Service fees (incl. VAT) | R69.00 |
| One repayment | R2,473.75 |
| Most you would repay | R2,473.75 |
Worked out at the legal maximums under the National Credit Act, with the repo rate at 7.25% (since 24 September 2026). A lender may charge less, never more. Check the exact figure in your pre-agreement quote. See all the legal caps or work out your own loan.

Is there an age limit for loans in South Africa?
Most providers on our panel ask you to be at least 18. Creditomax, a matching service, says applicants must be 18 to 75. Creditbar publishes no upper age limit.
