What Unifi asks for

  • A South African citizen, over 20 years old.
  • Formally employed and paid a monthly salary. Weekly or fortnightly pay doesn’t qualify.
  • Your salary is paid into ABSA, FNB, Standard Bank, Capitec, Nedbank, African Bank or TymeBank.
  • Not under debt review and not insolvent.

How to apply for a Unifi loan

  1. Check that you meet the requirements above.
  2. Apply on Unifi’s South African website. Unifi calls it “a quick, 5-minute online application”.
  3. Share your bank statements. “Superfast” shares them automatically, or you can upload them yourself.
  4. Read the quote and the credit agreement before you sign. Check the total you will repay.
  5. Once you have a loan, manage it through Unifi’s online login.

Unifi says it has “never charged upfront fees and never will”. You can settle your loan early to save on interest.

What a Unifi loan costs

Unifi’s APR looks high because it includes fees, not only interest. On a short loan, fixed fees add a lot to the rate.

The R995 initiation fee and R69 monthly fee match the legal maximums once 15% VAT is added.

The clearest number to compare is the total you repay. On Unifi’s example, that is R10,344 for an R8,000 loan.

How to choose

  • Check the provider's NCR number on the NCR register. A loan-matching service must tell you which lender you'll sign with.
  • Compare the total amount you will repay, in rand, not only the interest rate.
  • On short-term loans, a first loan may cost at most 5% interest a month. Later short-term loans in the same year are capped at 3%.
  • The initiation fee is capped at R165 plus 10% of the amount above R1,000, up to R1,050. It can never be more than 15% of the loan. The service fee is capped at R60 a month. VAT is added to both. See our responsible lending page.
  • Apply to one or two providers at a time. Many applications in a short period can hurt your credit score.
  • Already struggling with repayments? Talk to a registered debt counsellor before you borrow more.
