South African Loan Guides

Nineteen plain-English guides covering who actually qualifies for what, how the law protects you, and how our panel stacks up against other South African lenders — written to inform your decision, not just to sell you a loan.

Why we publish guides, not just comparison pages

Most South African loan comparison sites stop at listing lenders side by side. We've built out this guides section because a lot of the questions people actually have before applying for credit aren't "which lender is fastest" — they're things like whether they're realistically eligible at all, what a confusing term like "blacklisted" or "in duplum" actually means, or how a competitor's product they've seen advertised elsewhere stacks up against our own panel. Each guide below is written to answer one of those questions directly, using the same sourcing discipline as the rest of this site: figures and claims are drawn from lenders' own published information or from publicly available regulatory sources, and where we can't verify something, the guide says so rather than guessing.

The nineteen guides are grouped into four categories below. Eligibility, Honestly guides give an honest answer on whether a specific group of borrowers — students, the unemployed, SASSA recipients, or those with a low credit score — is likely to qualify with our lenders, including where the honest answer is that most of them aren't a realistic fit. Understanding Your Loan guides explain concepts that affect the cost or structure of a loan, like the difference between secured and unsecured credit, or long-term versus short-term borrowing. Other SA Lenders, Compared guides look at other well-known South African lenders and loan comparison services, and explain honestly how our own panel compares. Know the Law guides cover the legal protections every South African borrower has under the National Credit Act, from the NCR's role to what actually happens if you miss a repayment.

If you're not sure which guide applies to you

If your question is about a specific loan amount or type rather than a broader eligibility or compliance question, our loan type pages and loan amount pages are a faster starting point. And if you already know which lender you're considering, our lender reviews cover each one's full stated terms in detail.

A note on how we work: Lendable Marketplace is a comparison website, not a lender or a registered credit provider. Some lenders listed are directly registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR); others operate as loan-matching or aggregation services that refer you to a registered provider. Always confirm who you're contracting with, and check any NCR registration number at ncr.org.za, before signing.
